The Game of Aerial Chicken

Well not really. What you see is four out of the six aircraft converging head on to what
would appear to be an aerial disaster. What is really happening is that the aircraft on the
left are at an altitude of 1050 feet and the ones on the right are at 1000 feet. Just before
we cross the leader will give the command "break now." The lead aircraft of each formation
continue straight and their wingman break 45 degrees to the outside. By using parallax,
we create the optical illusion of a potential  midair. Our good friend Nic Summers took this
heart stopping picture at the Chicago Air & Water Show in 2006. Make sure to click on this
month's video to get an "in the cockpit" view of how quickly this maneuver actually takes.
